Village School
The Village School is the educational branch of The No Village Club, creating meaningful outdoor experiences for young children and families in the heart of New York City.
We believe childhood is meant to be lived through exploration: collecting leaves, watching birds, digging in soil, asking endless questions, telling stories under trees, and discovering the magic hidden in our own neighborhoods.
Through nature, play, and community, we help children build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong relationship with their natural world.
Our Approach
The Village School is inspired by nature-based education, outdoor classrooms, child-led exploration, and the belief that children learn best when they are active participants in their own discoveries.
Our programs blend:
-
Nature exploration
-
Storytelling and literacy
-
Creative expression
-
Hands-on discovery
-
Music and movement
-
Community connection
-
Honoring the history of the peoples who lived in this region
We don't believe children need to leave the city to experience wonder. Parks, gardens, sidewalks, and neighborhood green spaces become our classrooms.
Current Programs
A weekly outdoor gathering for young explorers and their grown-ups.
Children will:
-
investigate seasonal changes
-
learn about local plants and animals
-
engage in nature-inspired crafts and activities
-
listen to stories and songs
-
practice observation and curiosity
-
build friendships within their neighborhood and community
Each gathering is an invitation to slow down, explore, and rediscover the magic of childhood outdoors.
Our Daily Rhythm
While each hour long session follows the natural curiosity of the group, our gatherings are gently guided by a consistent rhythm that helps children feel safe, grounded, and free to explore:
-
Arrival and Welcome Circle - greeting each child, sharing names, and setting intentions for the day
-
Opening Story - grounding together through shared storytelling
-
Walk to the River - we journey together toward the water with a guiding question and a traveling song, noticing what we see, hear, and feel along the way
-
Activity and Exploration - child-led discovery and seasonal invitations such as nature art, observation games, sensory exploration, or group projects inspired by the environment
-
Shared Snack - a nourishing pause together, often featuring homemade bread and butter, as we rest, talk, and observe the world around us
-
Goodbye Circle - reflection, gratitude sharing, and a closing song before we part ways
This rhythm creates a balance of structure and freedom, allowing children to feel both held and independant in their learning.
Our Future Vision
The Village School is planting the seeds for something bigger.
Our long-term dream is to create The Lower East Side Village Preschool, a community-rooted outdoor preschool where children spend their days learning through nature, play, and connection.
Every class, every neighborhood walk, and every new friendship helps us build toward that vision.
